A group of concerned Malawians has called on the government to consider removing the annual Kamuzu Day public holiday, arguing that the country can no longer afford frequent work stoppages amid worsening economic challenges.
The citizens say Malawi is currently facing serious socio-economic problems, including rising fuel prices, high cost of living, unemployment, electricity blackouts and water shortages, conditions they believe require increased productivity rather than additional holidays.

Kamuzu Day, observed every 14th May, commemorates Malawi’s first President, , for his role in the country’s independence and post-colonial development.
However, some citizens now argue that while Dr. Banda’s historical contribution remains important, the holiday itself has become economically costly for businesses and public services.

Speaking during a community discussion in Blantyre, one concerned citizen said Malawi needs “more working days and economic recovery strategies” instead of continuous public holidays.
“We respect Kamuzu Banda’s contribution to Malawi, but the country is struggling economically. Businesses close, government offices stop operating and productivity declines whenever there is a holiday,” said the citizen.

Others have proposed that Kamuzu Day should remain a commemorative event without necessarily being observed as a nationwide public holiday.
Economic commentators say excessive public holidays can negatively affect productivity, especially in fragile economies where businesses already struggle with inflation, forex shortages and reduced consumer spending.

Meanwhile, some Malawians have strongly opposed the proposal, arguing that Kamuzu Day is part of the nation’s history and identity which should be protected and respected.
Political analysts warn that any move to remove the holiday could spark mixed reactions from citizens and political groups due to Dr. Banda’s historical significance in Malawi’s political history John Chilembwe Day: A call to unity, faith, And national renewal-Mwanamveka
The Malawi Government has not yet responded to the calls.
