President Lazarus Chakwera has announced that his administration has allocated K500 million to local councils in a strategic move aimed at boosting their efficiency.
He stated that this funding will ensure that development projects are effectively implemented, even in Malawi’s most remote areas.
Chakwera made these remarks during a public address at Emfeni Trading Centre.
He emphasized that it has been difficult for the central government to roll out development initiatives across all councils due to the country’s geographic vastness.
“However, by giving resources to these councils, we are enabling them to properly develop themselves,” said Chakwera.
He added that councils will now be able to personalise projects to their most immediate needs, which often vary from one area to another.
Chakwera said this decentralised approach will foster more responsive and impactful development.
Minister of Justice Titus Mvalo, who accompanied the President, praised the visit as a testament to Chakwera’s commitment to the welfare of all Malawians.
Mvalo noted that it is only a responsible and caring leader who makes time to visit his people and understand their everyday struggles.
He likened Chakwera’s outreach to that of a good father visiting his children to appreciate the challenges they are facing.
The K500 million allocation is expected to empower councils to independently prioritise and execute development projects tailored to the unique needs of their communities.
This move marks a significant step toward decentralisation and inclusive development under the Tonse Alliance government.
