Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Fleetwood Haiya has tipped newly appointed General Secretary Abu Chiwalo to usher in a new era of financial discipline, operational excellence, and stronger governance at the country’s football governing body.
Haiya described Chiwalo as a man bringing a “wealth of experience” to the role, highlighting his over 15 years of service spanning public, private, and development sectors.
“As a Chartered Accountant, Auditor, and seasoned consultant with international exposure, he is expected to strengthen FAM’s financial integrity, operational efficiency, and donor engagement,” Haiya said.
Beyond his credentials, Chiwalo has history on his side. He was part of the team that crafted FAM’s current strategic plan, giving him a head start on the association’s priorities and targets.
However, his appointment has not been without debate, drawing mixed reactions from football administrators and fans alike.
Chiwalo steps in to replace Alfred Gunda, whose term of office came to an end a few weeks ago. As the dust settles, all eyes will be on whether Chiwalo can turn promise into performance and deliver the transformation Malawi football craves.
