United Democratic Front (UDF) presidential candidate Atupele Muluzi on Thursday engaged young people in Lilongwe through a Presidential Youth Dialogue, a civic engagement initiative aimed at connecting Malawi’s youth with presidential hopefuls ahead of the highly anticipated 2025 General Elections.

The dialogue, organized by the Youth Decide Campaign, serves as a platform for young people to directly interact with political leaders and voice their concerns, priorities, and aspirations. With over 60 percent of Malawi’s population made up of youth, organizers say the event is crucial in ensuring that the next government reflects the needs and ideas of young Malawians.

Speaking during the event, Mwandida Theu, Coordinator of the Youth Decide Campaign, emphasized the importance of youth participation in shaping the country’s future. She noted that the dialogue is designed not only to bridge the gap between leaders and the youth, but also to encourage issue-based politics, accountable leadership, and meaningful citizen engagement.

“The voices of young people matter because they represent the majority. Their priorities—such as jobs, education, climate action, health, and technology—must be reflected in the national agenda,” Theu said.

Key Issues Discussed

The Presidential Youth Dialogue with Atupele Muluzi tackled several critical issues, including:

Youth employment and entrepreneurship – tackling high unemployment and creating opportunities for startups and innovation.

Education – improving access, quality, and relevance of education in line with global trends.

Technology and innovation – equipping young people with digital skills to thrive in a modern economy.

Health – strengthening health services for young people, including reproductive and mental health.

Climate action – ensuring that youth are part of environmental sustainability solutions.

Governance – promoting accountability, transparency, and inclusive participation.

Direct Interaction Through Live Q&A

One of the most notable highlights of the event was a live Question & Answer session that allowed participants to directly challenge and engage Atupele Muluzi on his vision for Malawi. This interactive session gave young people the opportunity to not only seek clarity but also to hold leadership accountable to their promises.

Building Momentum for the 2025 Elections

With elections just weeks away, analysts believe platforms such as the Presidential Youth Dialogue will play a significant role in shaping voter decisions, particularly among the youth. Political observers argue that for any candidate to succeed, winning the trust of young Malawians is key, as they represent the largest voting bloc.

The initiative by the Youth Decide Campaign is expected to continue with other presidential hopefuls, creating a competitive and issue-driven electoral environment that could reshape Malawi’s political culture.

Conclusion

Atupele Muluzi’s engagement with Malawi’s youth in Lilongwe demonstrates the growing recognition of the pivotal role young people play in national development and politics. As the 2025 General Elections draw closer, dialogues like these will ensure that the voices of Malawi’s youth are not only heard but translated into policies and actions that shape a brighter future for the nation.
