Lilongwe, Malawi – [Date] – Reinhold Lopatka, representative of the European Union Parliament Delegation, has commended the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) for its effective management of the country’s elections and thorough preparations leading up to the polls.
Lopatka highlighted the MEC’s professionalism and dedication in ensuring a smooth electoral process, describing its efforts as a positive example of good governance in Malawi.
However, the EU official expressed concern over the nature of political campaign messaging in the country. He observed that many political parties have been delivering messages that appear superficial and lack seriousness. “Such messages do not reflect the real challenges facing Malawi, particularly the needs of citizens in rural communities,” Lopatka noted.

In addition to campaign concerns, Lopatka criticized the performance of state-owned media houses. According to him, both broadcasting and print outlets exhibited strong bias, often failing to provide equitable platforms for all stakeholders. He emphasized that a balanced media is essential for a transparent and credible electoral process.
The EU representative called on political parties to focus on addressing real issues affecting Malawians, including poverty, education, healthcare, and infrastructure development, rather than relying on populist rhetoric.
