MEC Forced to Release Malawi Election Results as Remaining 2% Cannot Change Outcome

By Suleman Chitera

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has come under increasing pressure to release the official presidential election results after it became clear that the remaining 2% of uncounted votes will not affect the final outcome.

According to verified tallies, former President Arthur Peter Mutharika is leading with 62% of the national vote, while incumbent President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera trails at 34%. With such a commanding lead, analysts argue that even if all the outstanding votes were allocated to Chakwera, the final results would remain unchanged.

Growing Pressure on MEC

Opposition and civil society groups have been demanding transparency and swift action from MEC to prevent unrest. Political analysts have also warned that delays in announcing results could fuel unnecessary tension across the country.

Mutharika’s Commanding Lead

Arthur Peter Mutharika’s strong performance reflects significant support across the Southern and Eastern regions, where turnout has been particularly high. On the other hand, President Chakwera’s votes were concentrated mainly in the Central Region, but the margins have not been enough to close the gap.

What Next for Malawi?

With 62% against 34%, Mutharika appears set to make a dramatic political comeback. The official declaration from MEC is now seen as a formality, as numbers have made it mathematically impossible for Chakwera to overtake.

Observers from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and other international missions have already confirmed that the election process was largely credible, though they urged MEC to finalize and publish results without delay to maintain peace and confidence in the system.

Conclusion

The pressure on MEC is mounting as Malawians eagerly await the final announcement. With Mutharika holding an unassailable lead, the release of results will mark a turning point in Malawi’s political landscape, signaling the return of a familiar leader and the end of the Chakwera administration.
