Renowned political analyst Dr. George Chaima has urged authorities to ensure that the rule of law is applied to youths who took the law into their own hands by harassing citizens during the outgoing administration.

Dr. Chaima emphasized that although some of the youths have since issued public apologies, this alone should not exempt them from facing justice if they are found guilty of breaking the law.

“An apology does not mean they should be freed from responsibility. Justice must prevail, and those involved must be held accountable,” said Dr. Chaima.

According to him, allowing such cases to go unpunished would set a bad precedent and encourage future lawlessness. He stressed that upholding the rule of law in Malawi is the only way to restore public trust and ensure that all citizens, regardless of their political affiliations, respect democratic values.Limpopo FM warns MCP thugs against ambushing JB

Dr. Chaima further noted that prosecuting such cases will not only deliver justice but also act as a deterrent, helping other young people understand the importance of respecting the law and human rights.

Rule of Law in Malawi Under Spotlight

The call comes at a time when Malawi’s political landscape is undergoing major changes following the transition of power. Analysts say the way the justice system handles cases of political violence and intimidation will shape the country’s democratic future.

Many civil society organizations have also urged the government to strengthen accountability mechanisms and ensure that perpetrators of political violence face the law without bias or favoritism.

Conclusion

Dr. Chaima’s remarks serve as a reminder that justice and accountability remain key pillars of democracy. While forgiveness and reconciliation are important, they should not replace the rule of law. Ensuring justice will help Malawi build a culture where human rights are respected and protected for all.
