National Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya has said social media influencer Julius Mithi has been arrested following complaints from the National Registration Bureau (NRB) and Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).
He says Mithi will be taken to court within 48 hours and will likely answer offensive communication charges under the Electronic Transactions and Cyber Security Act.
The arrest, according to Kalaya, emanates from a Facebook post on March 19 2025, which reads as follows:
“News flash! Unverified but from JFM Reliable Source. 1,152,091 Malawian Eligible voters deleted in National Registration Bureau and MEC systems.”

Kalaya says many things have happened since the post.
“This is false [What he posted], and elections are an activity that is very emotive. Anything wrong about them can plunge the country into chaos.
“We will take him to court within 48 hours,” said Kalaya.
Currently, Mithi is being remanded at Mzuzu Police Station. We will keep you updated.
