Blantyre, October 4, 2025 — Malawi has officially ushered in a new era of leadership as Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and Justice Dr. Jane Ansah, SC (Retired), were sworn in as President and Vice President of the Republic of Malawi at a colorful ceremony held at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.
Professor Mutharika, who becomes Malawi’s 7th President, makes a remarkable political comeback, having previously served as Head of State from 2014 to 2020. His return marks a significant moment in Malawi’s democratic history, reflecting the will of Malawians who voted decisively for a change in leadership during the September 2025 general elections.
In his first term, Mutharika was credited for major infrastructure development, strengthening education and health sectors, and implementing economic reforms aimed at stabilizing the kwacha. His re-election is seen by many as an opportunity to continue these development initiatives and restore economic confidence.

Joining him in the new administration is Justice Dr. Jane Ansah, a highly respected legal luminary with a distinguished record of public service. Dr. Ansah has held some of the most senior legal positions in Malawi, including serving as Attorney General, Justice of the Supreme Court, and Chairperson of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).
Her appointment as Vice President makes her the second woman in Malawi’s history to hold the position, following Dr. Joyce Banda, who later became the country’s fourth president.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by former presidents, political leaders, religious figures, and thousands of Malawians who filled the Kamuzu Stadium to witness the historic event. Traditional dance groups from across the country added color and culture to the celebration, symbolizing unity and hope for a new beginning.
