Mzuzu, Malawi – Thousands of enthusiastic residents thronged Mzuzu City on Saturday to welcome Second Vice President Enock Chihana, who assured Malawians that government is prioritising food and fertiliser security as part of its strategy to stabilise the economy.

Making his first official visit to the Northern Region since his appointment, Chihana—who also serves as President of the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD)—said the current administration under President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and the Blue Alliance is fully committed to addressing the economic hardships inherited from the previous government.
Chihana told the cheering crowds that the government’s immediate priority is ensuring food security across all regions. He disclosed that maize sourced from Zambia is expected to arrive in the country within two weeks, a move aimed at easing the ongoing shortage affecting many households.
“We understand the struggles Malawians are facing. That’s why our focus is on ensuring every home has food and that fertiliser is available and affordable to all farmers,” said Chihana.
He further revealed that fertiliser shipments are already on the way under the direct supervision of President Mutharika, noting that reviving agricultural productivity remains key to rebuilding Malawi’s economy.
“Once food and fertiliser needs are secured, our next step will be stabilising the fuel supply nationwide,” Chihana added, stressing that government efforts are guided by long-term sustainability and economic recovery.
Also speaking at the event, Trywell Kasawala, the Deputy National Campaign Director for the Blue Alliance, encouraged citizens to remain optimistic, saying the administration has put in place a coordinated plan to stabilise essential commodities and restore confidence in the economy.
The Mzuzu visit marked a significant show of support for the new government, with many residents expressing renewed hope in the Blue Alliance’s commitment to deliver practical solutions to Malawi’s pressing economic challenges
