Scorchers make it to 2026 WAFCON, FAM president hails President Mutharika and First Lady’s support

The Scorchers, Malawi women’s national football team had achieved a historic milestone by earning a qualification for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after beating Angola 2:0 at Bingu National Stadium in the capital, Lilongwe. The two goals were scored by Faith Chinzimu in the second half of the second leg. The first leg, played in Luanda, Angola a week ago ended in a goalless draw.

The qualification is the first ever for the Scorchers.

Meanwhile, Football Associatiin of Malawi (FAM) president Fleetwood Haiya was overjoyed following the development.

Haiya extended his deepest gratitude to President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and First Lady Getrude Mutharika for their unwavering support, which had been instrumental in the team’s success.

As a token of appreciation, Haiya announced that each player and technical panel member would pocket a minimum of K1.5 million from the initial K500, 000.

He praised the fans for their electrifying support.

“Your passion and energy have been the driving force behind our team’s success,” he said.

The FAM president reiterated the association’s commitment to promoting football in Malawi, emphasising that both the Scorchers and Flames were ambassadors of the nation.

“We will continue to support both teams equally, as they represent the pride and excellence of Malawian football,” he said.

The nation erupted in jubilation, celebrating the Scorchers’ qualification and the bright future ahead for Malawian football.

The 2026 WAFCON edition is slated for March in Morocco.
