The defections were announced on Sunday during a major DPP rally held at St. Augustine 2 Primary School ground in Mangochi.

The event was attended by Vice-President Justice Dr. Jane Ansah, SC (retired), who graced the occasion.

Among those who crossed over from the UDF is Yaumi Mpaweni, who previously served as the party’s regional governor for the Lower Shire.

Also joining the DPP from the UDF is Gilbert Mwachumu, who held the position of deputy director for political affairs.

Former UDF publicity director Ken Ndanga has likewise joined the DPP.

Another notable defector from the UDF is Yusuf Mwawa.

From the UTM, the DPP has welcomed Jalisi Kamfozi, who served as the party’s research director.

Ireen Chilome, formerly responsible for political operations within the UTM, has also switched allegiance to the DPP.

The list of defectors further includes Regina Phiri, who was in charge of election operations for the UTM.

All the defectors were publicly received during the DPP rally to applause from thousands of supporters.

Their decision to join the DPP comes at a time when the party is consolidating its political strength following its electoral victory.

Vice-President Ansah commended the new members for choosing to align themselves with the DPP’s development agenda.

She said their arrival demonstrates growing confidence in the party’s leadership under President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.

The defections represent a significant political shift in the Eastern Region as the DPP continues to attract high-profile figures from rival parties.
