The Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) has urged Islamic organizations operating in the education sector to provide fair and timely salaries to their sheikhs, in line with Malawi’s labour laws.

Speaking on the issue, MAM Public Relations Officer Sheikh Dinala Chabulika highlighted the challenges faced by many sheikhs who go for months without receiving their salaries. “It is worrying that some religious teachers struggle to provide for their families due to delayed or insufficient pay,” he said.

Sheikh Chabulika emphasized that organizations must ensure the welfare of their staff, taking into account the current economic difficulties in the country. He also stressed that, beyond legal obligations, Islamic teachings guide the fair treatment of employees.

“We live in a country governed by laws that we ourselves created. It is unfair to neglect someone simply because they are a religious teacher. Every individual deserves to support their family and live with dignity,” Sheikh Chabulika added.

MAM’s statement comes as part of its ongoing advocacy for improved working conditions for religious educators in Malawi.
