The Muslim Ulama Council in Mangochi, under the Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM), has organised special prayers for good rains as parts of the country continue to experience erratic weather patterns.

Vice Chairperson of the council, Sheikh Mussa Adam, has told MBC Digital that the prayers will be held on Saturday, 7 February 2026, starting from 6:00 am at Muft Abbas Primary School ground in Mangochi.

Sheikh Adam said the initiative is rooted in faith and collective supplication, expressing hope that unity in prayer will bring relief to the nation.

“We believe that through collective prayers and faith, the nation can invoke mercy from God and bring about favourable weather conditions,” he said.

The prayers have been organised in response to a call by State President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, who has urged faith leaders and Malawians from all walks of life to unite in prayer for good rains across the country.

Sheikh Adam has since appealed to Muslims and members of the general public to attend the prayers, emphasizing that the challenge of inadequate rainfall affects everyone regardless of religious affiliation.

Malawi’s economy is largely dependent on rain-fed agriculture, and prolonged dry spells or erratic rains pose a serious threat to food security and livelihoods. Faith leaders across denominations have increasingly been called upon to play a role in mobilising communities during national challenges.

The Mangochi prayers are expected to draw believers from different parts of the district in a show of unity and shared concern for the country’s wellbeing.
