The British High Commissioner to Malawi, Leigh Stubblefield, has reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s unwavering support for Malawi’s economic recovery and long-term development, following a high-level courtesy call on Minister of Finance, Joseph Mwanamvekha, at Capital Hill in Lilongwe.
During the meeting, High Commissioner Stubblefield assured the Malawi Government of continued British partnership, describing Malawi as a key and trusted development partner. She highlighted the UK’s commitment to supporting Malawi across critical sectors that underpin sustainable growth and social resilience.
Minister Mwanamvekha expressed profound appreciation to the UK Government for its consistent and impactful support, particularly in humanitarian food assistance, health and education services, as well as technical assistance towards debt restructuring. He noted that such support has been instrumental in cushioning vulnerable populations while strengthening the country’s economic foundations.
Commending the Malawi Government’s reform efforts, Stubblefield applauded the implementation of austerity measures aimed at restoring macro-economic stability. She encouraged Capital Hill to maintain this reform trajectory, emphasizing that fiscal discipline is essential in rebuilding confidence among Cooperating Partners and attracting sustainable investment.
Looking ahead, the High Commissioner underscored the UK’s readiness to deepen cooperation through strategic investments in mining and energy, alongside continued support in health, education, climate financing, and capacity enhancement programmes under the fiscal decentralisation agenda. She stressed that these areas are critical for unlocking Malawi’s economic potential and improving service delivery at all levels.
The engagement reflects the strong and enduring partnership between Malawi and the United Kingdom, anchored in shared goals of economic stability, inclusive growth, and improved livelihoods for Malawians.
