There is growing concern in Lilongwe following reports that some land belonging to Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) is allegedly being sold irregularly, without following government laws and established procedures for managing public property. The issue has sparked anger among citizens, aviation experts, and institutions responsible for overseeing state assets.

According to information gathered, some individuals believed to hold influential positions in government, together with certain businesspeople, are allegedly abusing their authority to illegally allocate or sell land that is meant to serve as airport safety zones, future expansion areas, and assets for the benefit of the nation. Some of these areas are reportedly already being earmarked for construction or commercial use, despite the absence of clear and publicly disclosed approvals.

Aviation experts warn that selling or allocating airport land without proper technical and aviation safety assessments poses serious risks to aircraft operations, passengers, and Malawi’s international aviation reputation. “Airport land is not ordinary land; it includes buffer zones and critical safety areas that should never be interfered with,” said one expert who asked not to be named.

Residents of Lilongwe say they are puzzled by the emergence of construction activities in areas close to KIA while government authorities have not issued any official explanation. Many are questioning where the money from such alleged sales is going, who authorized the transactions, and why there has been no transparency.

Anti-corruption and good governance institutions are being urged to urgently intervene, conduct a comprehensive investigation, and halt all activities related to the sale or allocation of KIA land until the truth is established. Experts also stress that anyone found culpable should face stern action, including the repossession of all land allegedly sold illegally.

At a time when the country is grappling with economic challenges, the irregular disposal of public assets amounts to a serious betrayal of public trust. Kamuzu International Airport is a national asset, and its protection should take precedence over the interests of a few individuals.

The government is therefore expected to respond openly, clarify the status of the land, and ensure that the law is upheld. The nation is watching.
