Lilongwe, Malawi – Tomorrow, February 13, President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika will take centre stage at the Parliament Building in Lilongwe to deliver the State of the Nation Address (SONA), kicking off the 2026/2027 budget session. The address, scheduled for 10 a.m., is expected to set the tone for the country’s economic and social agenda for the coming year.
As Malawians await the President’s remarks, civil society leaders are urging that the address speaks directly to the challenges facing ordinary citizens, particularly those in rural areas. Milliam Chilemba, Chairperson of a consortium of Civil Society Organisations in Chiradzulu District, said the nation needs a SONA that is not only reflective of government achievements but also responsive to the daily realities of rural communities.
“Rural Malawians face persistent challenges—from limited access to healthcare and quality education to infrastructure gaps and economic hardships. We hope the President’s address will provide a vision that leaves no one behind,” Chilemba said.
This year’s SONA comes at a pivotal moment as Malawi grapples with rising costs of living, inflationary pressures, and the need for accelerated development. Observers expect the President to outline plans for key sectors including agriculture, education, healthcare, and energy, while addressing the government’s strategies for sustainable growth and fiscal management.
The State of the Nation Address also signals the start of the parliamentary budget session, giving lawmakers a framework for debating resource allocation for the 2026/2027 financial year. Citizens, civil society, and development partners will be watching closely to see whether the government’s plans reflect inclusivity, equity, and practical solutions for those most in need.
With expectations high, Malawians are hoping that President Mutharika’s SONA will not only celebrate past achievements but also provide a clear roadmap for tackling the country’s pressing challenges, bridging development gaps, and ensuring that no community is left behind.
