As Malawi awaits the State of the Nation Address (SONA) by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, many are left wondering if the speech will address the pressing issues affecting the country. The most obvious answers are yes or no, but Malawi Freedom Network correspondent Mabvuto Kalawa spoke to some citizens to get their views.
Group Village Headman Dilawo expects a lot from this year’s SONA, particularly on agriculture, health, education, tourism, and the ambitious K500 billion Constituency Development Fund. “During the former regime, it was a wastage for Malawians, and most have suffered because of negligence,” he said.
Director of Bright Vision Community Based Organization is also eager to see the SONA tackle major infrastructure issues like roads, school blocks, and better health services. “The SONA must try to solve problems of Malawians which they have faced under the MCP-led government,” he said.
Stella Banda, a businesswoman, thanked the President for increasing the Constituency Development Fund, saying it will empower women socially and economically. “The SONA must also tackle agriculture, health, education, water, and women empowerment,” she said.
As the hours tick away, Malawians are eager to know if this year’s SONA will heal the wounds of the past five years. Will it address the pressing issues of agriculture, health, education, and economic empowerment? Only time will tell.
Personally, I believe the SONA has the potential to be a turning point for Malawi, but it depends on the President’s commitment to implementing meaningful reforms and addressing the country’s structural challenges. The people are watching, and they expect tangible results.
