Onjezani Kenani expresses concern over Amaryllis Hotel overpriced sale

By Vincent Gunde

Social commentator Onjezani Kenani, has expressed his grave concern over the money Malawi politicians are playing with to buy a suspiciously overpriced Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre reminding them that the money is for the Public Service Pension Trust Fund (PSPTF).

Kenani said the money is a stand-alone defined Contributory Pension Fund for all public servants who were born on 1st January, 1982 and thereafter, and also all those who are joining public service after 1st July, 2017 regardless of age.

Writing on his face book page, Kenani has thanked Counsel Alexious Kamangila who shared with him all the documents related to Amaryllis Hotel sale saying he has seen a report by the Anti- Corruption Bureau (ACB) clearing the sale.

Kenani said at the same time, he has understood that the Acting Director General of the ACB is the Lawyer for Amaryllis Hotel but he hasn’t seen any disclosure of conflict of interest saying if it is true that the Acting ACB Director General is the Lawyer for Amaryllis Hotel, this then means that the clearance of the sale must itself be investigated.

“It is amazing that the owners of the money who were born on 1st January, 1982 and those joining public service after 1st July, 2017 are very quiet,” he said.

He said the Malawi Law Society (MLS) has already petitioned the Anti- Corruption Bureau (ACB) to investigate the figures K147 billion from the initial K47 billion offered saying this is raising serious concerns with K90 billion already paid towards the purchase of Amaryllis Hotel.

Reserve Bank Governor (RBM) who is Registrar of Financial Institutions Dr. George Partridge, has given the Board of Trustees of the Public Service Pension Trust Fund (PSPTF) seven days to submit to his office the reasons they don’t want him to impose administrative penalties on them.

Partridge has found the Board of Trustees guilty in proceeding with the transactions relating to the acquisition of the Amaryllis Hotel demanding the agreement reached to be rescinded observing that the Board did that fully aware that the transactions will result in a breach of financial service.

“The Board of Trustees proceeded to close the transactions prior to making the comprehensive submission requested in the letter dated 23rd December, 2025,” he said.

Speaking during the opening of the Budget session of Parliament on 13th February, 2026 President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika made it clear that his government will arrest anyone involved in corrupt malpractices.

“When I say anyone, I mean anyone, it doesn’t matter whether you are a cabinet minister, Member of Parliament (MP), orparty official, I will shield no one, and there will be no sacred cows, let us make Malawi a land of Justice,” he said.
