BEAM Trust targets over 6,900 schools nationwide in major sanitation and cholera prevention drive

First Lady Professor Gertrude Mutharika has officially launched the “My Clean School, My Pride” campaign through the Beautify Malawi (BEAM) Trust, in a bold nationwide initiative aimed at promoting cleanliness, hygiene, and healthy learning environments in schools across Malawi.

The campaign, which targets both public and private schools, was launched on Friday at Phalombe Primary School Ground, where thousands gathered to witness the start of what many have described as a transformative sanitation movement for the country’s education sector.

Speaking during the launch, Professor Mutharika emphasized that the initiative is designed to encourage healthy living conditions among learners and communities while helping to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera.

“We want all our children to remain healthy at school and at home. It should be everyone’s responsibility to take care of our homes, as well as public and private spaces, ensuring that waste is disposed of in the right places,” said Mutharika.

The First Lady stressed that cleanliness must become a lasting culture among Malawians and not just a temporary exercise tied to competitions or special events. She said the campaign will initially be implemented at constituency level before expanding to district level across the country.

The “My Clean School, My Pride” initiative comes at a critical time when Malawi continues to battle cholera outbreaks in several districts, with authorities intensifying efforts to improve sanitation and public health awareness.

Professor Mutharika further revealed that participating schools will receive sanitation materials to support cleanliness efforts, with a total of 6,952 schools expected to take part in the competition nationwide.

Traditional leaders have also thrown their support behind the campaign.

She called upon fellow chiefs and local leaders to take an active role in promoting hygiene and ensuring that villages, schools, and public spaces remain clean at all times.

The campaign is expected to strengthen community participation in sanitation activities while instilling discipline, responsibility, and environmental awareness among learners.

Education and health stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, saying clean schools contribute significantly to improved academic performance, reduced absenteeism, and the overall well-being of learners.

With thousands of schools expected to participate, the “My Clean School, My Pride” campaign is being viewed as one of the largest school sanitation and hygiene drives ever launched in Malawi.
