KARONGA, Malawi — Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga and Chitipa has expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the Karonga–Chiweta section of the M1 Road, saying the situation is negatively affecting agriculture, healthcare, education, and business activities in the northern region.
In a statement shared on his Facebook page, the traditional leader said the poor state of the road is causing significant hardships for communities that rely on the route for transportation and access to essential services.
According to Kyungu, many farmers are struggling to transport their agricultural produce to markets, particularly during the rainy season when sections of the road become difficult to pass. He warned that this is leading to post-harvest losses and reduced incomes for farming households.
The chief also noted that patients face serious challenges in reaching health facilities on time, a situation that could put lives at risk, especially in emergency cases.Minister Gives Construction Company Two Weeks Ultimatum
On the economic front, Kyungu said businesses are bearing the burden of increased transportation costs as vehicles spend more time navigating the damaged road. He added that the higher transport expenses are contributing to rising prices of goods imported through neighbouring countries such as Tanzania and Zambia.
“The Songwe–Karonga–Chiweta Road is a socio-economic lifeline for Malawi,” Kyungu said, emphasizing the route’s strategic importance in facilitating trade, movement of people, and regional connectivity.
He therefore called on the government to expedite rehabilitation works on the road, arguing that improved infrastructure would boost economic growth and improve access to essential services across the region.Lwara accuses MCP members of insulting Bishop Mtumbuka
The traditional leader further appealed to Members of Parliament from the affected areas to unite and advocate for urgent intervention, regardless of political affiliation.
Kyungu also highlighted the significance of other key roads in the Northern Region, including the Mbilima–Chitipa–Karonga Road and the Nthalire–Chitipa–Rumphi Road, saying their improvement is crucial for unlocking economic opportunities and strengthening connectivity.
The call comes amid growing concerns from residents, transporters, and business operators who have repeatedly complained about the condition of roads in northern Malawi, particularly during the rainy season when travel becomes more difficult.Karonga MP Mwenifumbo Challenges Lawmakers: Focus on Roads, Hospitals and Schools, Not MEC Relocation Battle
Infrastructure development remains one of the government’s key priorities, with stakeholders continuing to push for accelerated investment in road rehabilitation projects to support trade, agriculture, tourism, and social services.
