The Women Lawyers Association (WLA) has urged the judiciary to take firm action against court officials suspected of engaging in corrupt activities. This call comes in light of recent reports suggesting that some judges and court officers are involved in fraudulent practices.
In a statement released by the WLA, the organization called on national authorities to urgently address the Judicial Service Bill, which would include laws to protect whistleblowers who report cases of corruption within the judiciary. The association emphasized that swift action is necessary to ensure justice is upheld.
The WLA also expressed concern that the increase in corrupt activities within the judicial system disproportionately affects women, who often struggle to obtain justice in the courts. Many cases are reportedly mishandled or unfairly ruled due to the influence of corruption.
Recently, the Parliamentary Legal Affairs Committee announced plans to investigate allegations of corruption within the judiciary, a move welcomed by human rights organizations. These groups have also called for thorough investigations into the matter.
The issue of corruption in the judiciary gained attention after lawyer Alexious Kamangila exposed fraudulent activities on social media, accusing Kenan Manda and others of manipulating court rulings for personal gain.
The WLA is advocating for comprehensive reforms and greater transparency to restore faith in the judicial system, ensuring that justice is served without prejudice or corruption.
