Former President Joyce Banda, leader of the People’s Party (PP), faced a significant setback today as heavy rains and deteriorated roads forced her to cancel a political rally at Makanjira in Mangochi. The region, already struggling with infrastructure damage caused by previous floods, proved impassable for Banda and her team.
Instead, the former president redirected her campaign efforts to Lungwena Trade Center, where she addressed her supporters. Banda used the opportunity to emphasize the importance of voter registration ahead of the elections, scheduled to commence in the district on November 28. She called on citizens to elect leaders with genuine concern for the country’s welfare, pointing to current economic challenges as a lesson in leadership failures.
“Our country has faced tremendous economic hardships under the present administration. This is why it’s crucial to vote for leaders who prioritize the needs of the people,” Banda said.
Despite the challenges, People’s Party officials ensured that the campaign efforts continued at Makanjira Trading Center. Director of Women Beatrice Mwale and Secretary General Ben Chakhame took charge, addressing the crowd in Banda’s absence. The gathering was further enlivened by popular artist Gibo Pearson, who performed to entertain the audience.
Poor Road Infrastructure Hampers Political Outreach
The cancellation of the rally at Makanjira highlights the pressing need for improved road infrastructure in Mangochi. Locals in the area have long struggled with mobility, especially during the rainy season. These conditions not only disrupt political campaigns but also hinder access to essential services such as healthcare and education.
Observers note that such challenges underscore the importance of electing leaders who will prioritize infrastructure development in neglected areas.
Voter Mobilization Campaign
Joyce Banda’s visit is part of an ongoing effort by political leaders to encourage voter registration in preparation for the 2025 general elections. With a large portion of the population yet to register, political parties are intensifying their efforts to ensure maximum participation.
The PP’s continued focus on grassroots mobilization reflects its strategy to rebuild its political base and appeal to rural voters, who have historically been critical to election outcomes.
As campaigns gain momentum across the country, Banda’s message of electing selfless and capable leaders resonates with many Malawians seeking solutions to economic and social challenges.
The disruption of Joyce Banda’s rally in Makanjira due to heavy rains underscores both the logistical challenges of campaigning in rural areas and the broader issue of inadequate infrastructure. Nonetheless, the former president’s persistence in addressing her supporters at Lungwena Trade Center demonstrates her commitment to reaching the electorate. With voter registration underway, the People’s Party is leveraging such events to rally support and emphasize the importance of choosing competent leadership in the forthcoming elections.
