Atupele Muluzi, leader of the United Democratic Front (UDF), has called for an investigation into the National Registration Bureau (NRB) following the discovery of national identity cards and other materials linked to the bureau in a private residence in Kanengo, Lilongwe.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Muluzi expressed concern that the NRB may be involved in producing additional identity cards aimed at boosting the ruling Malawi Congress Party’s (MCP) votes in the 2025 elections. He warned that such actions, if true, could jeopardize the country’s democratic processes.

Muluzi urged civil society organizations, opposition leaders, and foreign diplomats in Malawi to ensure that the matter is thoroughly investigated and justice prevails. He emphasized the importance of protecting the integrity of the electoral process.

Meanwhile, NRB Director Mphatso Sambo has dismissed allegations of foul play, stating that the premises where the materials were found belong to the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA), not the NRB. Sambo assured the public that the NRB remains committed to transparency and accountability.

As the 2025 elections approach, the controversy has sparked debate among citizens, raising questions about the readiness of Malawi’s institutions to deliver free and fair elections.
