The Concerned Citizens of Malawi, under the leadership of Comrade Edwards Kambanje of the People Power Movement, have issued a press statement condemning recent acts of violence and calling for the upholding of the rule of law and respect for human rights in Malawi.
Kambanje strongly denounced the tragic incidents involving the killing of a police officer in Chiponde and the death of a civilian in Makanjila, Mangochi District. He expressed heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and colleagues, emphasizing that the perpetrators of these heinous acts must face justice.
In addition, Kambanje criticized the violent events of November 13 in Lilongwe, where individuals wielding machetes disrupted peaceful demonstrations under police watch. “This is unacceptable as it undermines our democratic principles,” he said, urging the Malawi Police Service to conduct impartial investigations and hold those responsible accountable.
The press statement specifically addressed:
1) The hacking and dispersal of peaceful demonstrators in Lilongwe.
2) The killing of a police officer in Chiponde, Mangochi.
3) The tragic death of a civilian in Makanjila, Mangochi.
The Malawi Police Service has been called upon to reaffirm its commitment to operating within the law, as outlined in Sections 16 and 38 of the Republican Constitution. Kambanje emphasized the police’s duty to protect citizens rather than provoke or use unnecessary force against them.
Kambanje urged citizens to avoid taking the law into their own hands and instead work collaboratively with law enforcement to resolve disputes through peaceful means. He stressed the importance of mutual respect between citizens and police officers to foster an environment of cooperation and understanding.
“Violence against any individual, whether a police officer or a civilian, is unacceptable and must be addressed with the utmost seriousness,” he stated.
The Concerned Citizens reiterated their commitment to justice, accountability, and the protection of human rights. They called on all stakeholders, including community leaders, law enforcement, and policymakers, to engage in dialogue to maintain peace and stability.
“As we face these challenging times, let us work together to promote peace, respect, and the rule of law,” Kambanje said. He encouraged the Malawi Police Service to continue serving with integrity and compassion while fostering trust with the communities they serve.
The Concerned Citizens remain dedicated to building a society that values life, respects human dignity, and upholds the rule of law.
