High expectations are building as Minister of Finance Simplex Chithyola Banda is set to present the 2025/26 National Budget this afternoon.
In random interviews with various Members of Parliament, the common belief is the hope that the budget will address the pressing economic challenges currently facing Malawians.

For instance, Ismail Mkumba, Member of Parliament for Blantyre Malabada and Deputy Leader of the United Democratic Front (UDF), has urged the government to focus on solutions that tackle the hunger crisis, currency shortages, and the rising inflation rate.
Mkumba has further emphasized the importance of establishing locally-owned industries, which he believes could alleviate hunger issues and enhance foreign exchange earnings through the export of Malawian goods.

Another MP, Eurita Ntiza Valeta, representing Nsanje South West, has called for an increase in the Constituency Development Fund which is currently pegged at K200 million.
“Urgues that more funding is essential for constituencies to effectively implement development projects,” said Ntiza Valeta.
Meanwhile, Wachepa Phiri, Member of Parliament for Mzimba East, has pressed the government to prioritize the construction of the Mzimba-Eswasini road.
“improved transportation infrastructure would facilitate business operations and promote access within his constituency,” said Phiri.
The upcoming budget presentation has stirred anticipation among lawmakers and citizens alike, as many look for comprehensive strategies to navigate the nation’s economic difficulties.
