Strengthening digital literacy and cybersecurity in Malawi

By Burnett Munthali

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has called for increased digital literacy and cybersecurity awareness to protect the nation against rising cyber threats.

MACRA Director General, Daud Suleman, made this call during a discussion on digital rights, laws, technology, and myths at the University of Malawi (UNIMA) in Zomba this evening.

Suleman emphasized the need for Malawians to understand the limitations of technology and the risks associated with digital devices.

He highlighted that absolute privacy does not exist in the online world, and users must be aware of potential risks when engaging with digital platforms.

As part of its awareness campaign, MACRA is not only educating existing digital users on safe online practices but is also targeting future users to ensure they enter the digital space with a solid understanding of cybersecurity.

Dr. Kondwani Munthali, Head of the Computing Department at UNIMA, acknowledged the university’s critical role in raising awareness on cybersecurity issues.

He welcomed the engagement with MACRA, stating that such discussions are timely and necessary to prepare Malawians for the challenges of the digital era.

With the rapid advancement of technology, it has become increasingly important for individuals and institutions to prioritize cybersecurity and safe digital practices.

MACRA’s initiative aims to equip Malawians with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the digital space securely while minimizing the risks of cybercrime.

The discussion at UNIMA marks an important step in fostering a culture of responsible digital usage and ensuring that Malawi remains resilient against cyber threats.
