The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) women are set to express their heartfelt appreciation to a Dowa woman who provided refuge to party members whose minibus was torched by Malawi Congress Party (MCP) thugs during a rally. DPP National Director of Women, Mary Navicha, will lead the women in a gesture of gratitude to the good Samaritan.
The incident left the women traumatized and without a place to go, but the Dowa woman’s kindness and bravery provided them with shelter and care despite receiving threats to release them. Navicha praised the woman’s selflessness, saying she stood firm despite the challenges.
Navicha, affectionately known as the “Queen of Malawian Women” for her tireless efforts in promoting women’s welfare and rights, regardless of party affiliation, emphasized the importance of protecting women from violence. Speaking at a Public Affairs Committee inclusive stakeholders conference in Blantyre, she pleaded with Inspector General of Police, Merlylin Yolamu, to take a leading role in safeguarding women.
“Women are living in fear due to violence, and it’s essential that they are protected,” Navicha said.
She expressed happiness that key positions, including Inspector General of Police, Speaker of Parliament, and Malawi Electoral Commission Chair, are held by women, and urged them to prioritize women’s protection.
The DPP women’s gesture of appreciation to the good Samaritan is a testament to the party’s appreciation for her kindness. The incident highlights the challenges women face in their political pursuits and the need for protection and support.
As the country moves forward, it’s essential that women are protected and empowered to participate in the political process without fear.
The event will serve as a reminder of the importance of kindness, bravery, and support in the face of adversity.
Navicha’s leadership and dedication to women’s welfare have earned her recognition and respect across party lines.
