Only 88 Days to Go: Malawi Electoral Commission Ramps Up Preparations for the 2025 General Election

By Burnett Munthali

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has officially announced that only 88 days remain until the 2025 General Election, scheduled for 16th September 2025.

This reminder, issued on 20th June 2025, forms part of the Commission’s intensified voter and candidate education campaign as the election date draws nearer.

In its latest update, MEC has highlighted a crucial deadline in the electoral calendar that aspiring candidates must not overlook.

According to the Commission, the last day for paying nomination fees and collecting nomination papers is set for 30th July 2025.

This date also marks the final day for submitting completed nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission.

The Commission urges all individuals intending to contest in the upcoming general election to treat this deadline with utmost seriousness and ensure full compliance with the electoral requirements.

Failure to meet this requirement by the deadline will disqualify prospective candidates from participating in the 2025 electoral race.

MEC has reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair, and transparent elections and continues to provide guidance and information through various platforms to ensure wide public awareness.

The ongoing voter education emphasizes not only participation in the election process but also timely action by all stakeholders involved.

The theme, “Your Vote, Your Right, Your Choice,” continues to underline MEC’s dedication to empowering Malawians in shaping the future leadership of the country.

As the countdown continues, political parties, independent candidates, and voters alike are being called upon to remain vigilant, informed, and ready for the democratic exercise that awaits.

MEC encourages all eligible voters and aspirants to take advantage of the resources and information provided to make informed and timely decisions.

The stage is set for what promises to be a landmark electoral event in Malawi’s democratic journey.
