The Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) has made an urgent appeal to the Malawi Police Service and the Malawi Defence Force to jointly institute a thorough investigation into the recent attacks on protesters in Lilongwe.
In a strongly worded letter, Archbishop Mark Kambalazaza, Chairman of the EAM National Executive Committee, and Reverend Francis Mkandawire, the organisation’s General Secretary, called for accountability from all involved, including any security officers who may have violated their constitutional duties and democratic obligations.
The EAM emphasized that no one should be above the law and that those found guilty must be held responsible for their actions.
The association stressed the importance of upholding democratic values, particularly by institutions tasked with ensuring public safety and order.
Additionally, the religious body urged the Malawi Police Service and the Malawi Defence Force to design and implement a clear and proactive strategy to prevent a recurrence of such incidents, especially as the country nears the official campaign period.
The EAM joined a growing number of voices demanding that justice be served, insisting that legal measures should be applied impartially and without favoritism.
The organisation expressed deep concern over a growing pattern in which individuals are seen carrying dangerous weapons during demonstrations and political gatherings.
Such a trend, the EAM warned, poses a serious threat to public peace and democratic stability.
The religious body further called upon leaders of all political parties to take a firm stand and publicly denounce any acts or language that may fuel violence among their followers.
The EAM emphasized that political leaders have a moral responsibility to promote peace and unity, rather than division and hostility.
As tensions continue to simmer in the aftermath of the Lilongwe violence, the EAM’s statement adds to mounting pressure on authorities and political actors to act swiftly, decisively, and responsibly.
