The Chairperson of the Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM), Sheikh Idrissah Muhammad, has blamed Malawians themselves for the country’s socio-economic struggles, saying the nation’s foundations have been eroded by its own citizens.

Sheikh Muhammad made the remarks during an interfaith prayer ceremony held in Lilongwe as part of Malawi’s 61st Independence Day celebrations.
Speaking at the event, Muhammad said jealousy, selfishness, and dishonesty have become rampant in society, contributing significantly to the country’s lack of progress.
“Our nation’s downfall is not because of outsiders. It is our own citizens who have brought it to its knees through envy, self-interest, and lies,” he said.
The solemn gathering, attended by religious leaders from various denominations, featured prayers and sermons focused on unity, moral responsibility, and national healing. President Lazarus Chakwera led the ceremony, emphasizing the role of faith communities in fostering peace and development.
As part of the commemorations, a donation was presented to the Mayi Mbambande Elderly Care Centre, symbolizing a call to compassion and service to vulnerable groups in society.
The remarks by Sheikh Muhammad have sparked reflection among citizens and leaders alike, with calls for a renewed sense of patriotism and ethical leadership echoing across the event.
