Chibambo’s Presidential Bid Hits a Snag as Running Mate Misses Deadline

By Suleman Chitera

Kamuzu Chibambo, leader of the People’s Transformation Party (Petra), has suffered a major blow in his bid for the presidency after his running mate, Chris Kulakwacha, failed to show up for the nomination paper submission—forcing the electoral commission to disqualify the ticket.

Chibambo had named Kulakwacha, a South Africa-based Malawian, as his vice-presidential candidate in a move aimed at strengthening his campaign ahead of the much-anticipated general elections. However, Kulakwacha’s absence at the critical submission ceremony—reportedly due to travel challenges—has cost the Petra ticket a place on the ballot.

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) confirmed the disqualification, citing strict adherence to deadlines and procedures.

“The nomination period is closed. No further allowances will be made,” a MEC spokesperson said.

With the clock ticking toward the September 16 election, Chibambo’s camp now faces an uncertain political future, raising questions about Petra’s next move—and whether the party will endorse another candidate.

Observers say this incident underscores the importance of logistical planning and preparedness in high-stakes political races.
