Malawi at the Crossroads: The Election Was Stolen Before the Vote

By Comrade Jumbe 24/08/25

My fellow Malawians,

As September 16 approaches, the sound of drums, songs, and slogans fills the air.

Crowds gather at rallies, and surveys are being paraded to give us comfort.

But let us not be deceived. “The drum sounds loudest before it breaks.”

What we are celebrating may not be the victory we think.

I have a heavy conviction that the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has already rigged this election.

The handwriting is on the wall. If we walk blindly into this trap, we are preparing ourselves for another five years of pain, poverty, and perhaps more bloodshed.

MCP has never ruled with mercy; it has always governed with the iron hand of mafiesto politics. And when a regime shows no compassion, it is like a leopard that never changes its spots.

Where Did We Lose the Election?

We lost it when we refused to take seriously the rigging that started long before campaigns. Go to the data of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) and see with your own eyes: the number of voters registered in the Southern and Eastern regions compared to the Central and Northern regions. That imbalance was no accident; it was designed.

The voters’ roll is littered with minors, double registrations, and ghost voters. Yet MEC continues to resist an independent audit.

Tell me, what thief ever allows himself to be searched? “The rat that steals at night fears the moonlight.”

MCP cadets are already embedded within MEC, pulling the strings.

Meanwhile, President Chakwera has been buying voters with taxpayers’ money, hosting feasts at State Houses.

This is not democracy; this is theft dressed in the clothes of elections.

Crowds Are Not Victory

Do not be carried away by the size of political rallies. An African proverb reminds us: “A crowd is not company, and faces are not food.”

The cheering multitude does not translate into ballots honestly counted. Neither should we trust opinion polls that declare Arthur Mutharika the winner — numbers on paper mean nothing when the system is rigged at the roots.

The Warning We Ignored

I once called for a boycott of these elections, not because I fear the ballot, but because I saw the trap being laid.

Sometimes wisdom demands that we refuse to play in a rigged game. “If the frog tells you the crocodile is sick, believe it, for it has swum across the same river.”

A Call to Awake

Let no Malawian say tomorrow, “I was not told.” If we go blindly into September 16, we will reap the thorns of regret.

This is not just about politics; it is about the survival of our nation, about justice for our children, about the very soul of Malawi.

The destiny of Malawi cannot be left in the hands of thieves.

We must remain vigilant, we must speak truth, and we must guard our vote with courage. Otherwise, the oven of suffering will only grow hotter, and the poor man will pay the price while the corrupt feast on our sweat.

My fellow Malawians, the choice before us is clear: either we defend our future now, or we watch it stolen in broad daylight.

My pen 🖊 is mightier than a sword .
