Blantyre, Malawi – Former President Bakili Muluzi has called on President Lazarus Chakwera to gracefully accept the official Malawi election results and extend his best wishes to opposition leader Peter Mutharika, who is leading in the presidential race.

Speaking to Zodiak Broadcasting Station on Monday, Muluzi said that based on the way results are unfolding, it is clear that Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has emerged victorious. He emphasized that Chakwera’s concession would be crucial in calming tensions among political party supporters across the country.Limpopo FM calls UTM supporters to vote for Mutharika

“There is life after State House. I know Chakwera is a man of peace. I have asked him to call Mutharika and wish him well,” said Muluzi.

The former head of state further appealed to Malawians to safeguard peace and unity by refraining from acts of violence or property destruction, which could destabilize the nation.

Why Muluzi’s Message Matters

Malawi’s political history shows that election results often ignite strong emotions among supporters.

A concession by Chakwera could prevent potential unrest and reassure international observers of Malawi’s democratic maturity.

Peaceful transitions of power are critical to maintaining investor confidence, economic stability, and national unity.

Call for Peace in Malawi

Muluzi, who served as Malawi’s first democratically elected president from 1994 to 2004, reminded citizens that democracy thrives on acceptance of results and respect for constitutional processes. He urged all Malawians, regardless of political affiliation, to prioritize peace over violence.

As the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) continues to release final tallies, the spotlight remains on Chakwera’s next move, which could shape the tone of Malawi’s political future.
