The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has arrested two additional suspects linked to the notorious panga knife gang that has been terrorizing residents in Lilongwe and surrounding areas.
The latest arrests bring the total number of suspects in police custody to seventeen, marking a significant breakthrough in the ongoing crackdown against organized violent crime in the capital.
According to police reports, the two suspects were apprehended during a targeted operation conducted over the weekend in the city’s high-risk zones, where the gang is believed to have been operating.
The panga knife gang has been accused of carrying out a string of violent attacks, robberies, and home invasions, leaving several victims injured and causing widespread fear among residents.
Police say intelligence-led operations have been instrumental in tracking down members of the criminal network, with community tip-offs playing a critical role in the latest arrests.
Lilongwe Police Spokesperson has commended the public for their cooperation, noting that the arrests demonstrate the success of joint efforts between law enforcement and vigilant citizens.
He assured the public that police will continue to intensify patrols and surveillance in hotspot areas to ensure that peace and security are fully restored.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon to face charges related to armed robbery, assault, and unlawful possession of dangerous weapons.
Meanwhile, authorities have warned remaining gang members still at large to surrender, stating that the law will take its full course against anyone involved in criminal activities.
The arrests come amid growing public demand for stronger policing and community safety measures in Lilongwe, where panga-knife attacks have recently surged.
Residents have welcomed the police action, describing it as a long-awaited relief from months of insecurity that have disrupted business and social life in parts of the city.
As the crackdown continues, the Malawi Police Service has reiterated its commitment to protecting citizens and dismantling all organized crime groups operating across the country.
