Lilongwe, Malawi — Two of Malawi’s leading commercial banks — FDH Bank and First Capital Bank (FCB) — have stepped forward with significant financial contributions to support the government’s efforts to combat hunger and ensure food security for vulnerable communities across the country.
In a show of solidarity and corporate social responsibility, FDH Bank has donated K150 million to the government led by Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to assist in the purchase of maize for families affected by food shortages.
Just a day later, First Capital Bank (FCB) followed suit, presenting a K210 million contribution through the Minister of Finance, Hon. Joseph Mwanamvekha, to help boost the national maize procurement initiative.
Banks Show Confidence in Government Leadership
Both donations reflect growing confidence from the private sector in the leadership and economic recovery strategies championed by Professor Mutharika and his finance team. The banks’ contributions signal a renewed partnership between government and the private sector to address urgent humanitarian needs while strengthening Malawi’s food security systems.

According to Hon. Mwanamvekha, the donations will go directly toward purchasing maize to distribute to areas hardest hit by food shortages. He further encouraged other companies, organisations, and financial institutions to emulate FDH and FCB’s example by supporting national efforts to ensure that no Malawian dies of hunger.
“This is not just about charity; it is about patriotism and responsibility,” said Hon. Mwanamvekha. “Every contribution counts as we work together to make sure all Malawians have access to food.”
Public Applauds Renewed Leadership and Economic Vision
The donations come amid widespread public appreciation for what many describe as a renewed sense of direction and stability under Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s administration. Citizens have praised the government’s proactive engagement with the private sector to tackle hunger, revive economic confidence, and restore Malawi’s resilience in the face of challenges.

Observers note that the financial support demonstrates the private sector’s trust in the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government’s policies and commitment to sustainable national development.
Call to Action
The government continues to appeal to local and international partners, as well as development agencies, to contribute towards ensuring that adequate food supplies reach every Malawian household.
As Malawi unites behind this humanitarian cause, it is clear that collaboration between government, private institutions, and citizens will be key to achieving food security and long-term economic growth.
Indeed, APM is back — with vision, action, and renewed hope for Malawi.
