Parliament’s Public Appointments Committee (PAC) has approved Fostino Maele as Malawi’s new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The confirmation follows a vetting process led by PAC Chairperson Felix Njawala, who said the committee’s primary focus was restoring public confidence in the country’s prosecution system.
Njawala noted that the approval comes at a time when Malawians have raised concerns over persistent delays in high-profile prosecutions.
He added that the vetting process also assessed Maele’s approach toward addressing cases that have been discontinued without clear justification.
Njawala emphasized that the credibility of the criminal justice system relies heavily on the DPP’s ability to act independently, transparently and in the public interest.
The appointment is expected to bring renewed momentum to stalled legal processes and reinforce accountability within law enforcement institutions.
Observers say Maele inherits an office that has faced intense public scrutiny in recent years due to allegations of selective justice and inconsistencies in case management.
PAC has expressed confidence that Maele has the professional background and integrity required to stabilise the office and rebuild trust.
The approval marks a significant step in Malawi’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the rule of law and improve the efficiency of the justice delivery system.
Further reaction from the legal community and governance stakeholders is expected as Maele assumes his new role.
