LILONGWE, Malawi — Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei has announced plans to train and equip 500 young Malawians with advanced digital and information communication technology (ICT) skills as part of efforts to support the country’s digital transformation and national development agenda.Namalomba Fires Warning on Fertilizer Corruption, Hails Mangochi Voters for Standing with DPP
The initiative was unveiled during the launch of the 2026 Huawei ICT Development Programme in Lilongwe, where government officials and development partners highlighted the critical role of technology in accelerating Malawi’s socio-economic growth.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Shadric Namalomba, described ICT as a key pillar in achieving the aspirations outlined in Malawi 2063 (MW2063), the country’s long-term development blueprint.

“One of the most significant challenges facing developing economies is the growing gap between demand for advanced skills and the supply of qualified professionals. Industries are seeking experts in cloud technologies, artificial intelligence, software engineering and data science,” said Namalomba.
He noted that empowering young people with digital competencies would strengthen innovation, improve productivity, and enhance Malawi’s competitiveness in the global digital economy.
Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, Lu Xu, said Huawei remains committed to supporting Malawi’s digital development through skills transfer and technology partnerships.
According to the ambassador, the company plans to train approximately 500 young Malawians this year, equipping them with practical digital skills that can be applied across key sectors such as education, agriculture, healthcare, and telecommunications.DPP denies allegations of research manipulation: “No reason to interfere,” says Namalomba
“Through this programme, Huawei aims to empower Malawi’s youth with the knowledge and technological expertise needed to contribute meaningfully to national development,” she said.
The Huawei ICT Development Programme has become one of the leading technology capacity-building initiatives in Malawi. Over the years, Huawei has supported the establishment of ICT academies in several higher learning institutions across Malawi, helping to expand access to digital education and professional certification programmes.
