The United Democratic Front (UDF) is facing growing internal pressure following the controversial decision by Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament Esther Jolobala to openly campaign for a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate in the forthcoming Machinga Mikoko parliamentary by-election.
The development has sparked debate within the party, with some members demanding disciplinary action against Jolobala, accusing her of undermining the party’s candidate and violating party loyalty.UDF questions government why Malawians paying more over fuel adjustment?
UDF spokesperson Labana Chilungo confirmed that the party leadership has already summoned Jolobala to explain her actions.
“We invited Mrs. Jolobala for discussions so that we could understand why she has chosen to support a candidate from another political party instead of backing the UDF candidate contesting in the election,” said Chilungo.
According to Chilungo, the matter remains under review and the party is expected to announce its official position in the coming days. However, reports indicate that some party members are pushing for tougher measures, including the possibility of expelling Jolobala from the party.NRB Ikunyozera Chigamulo Cha Khoti–Jolobala
The controversy emerged after Jolobala, a longtime UDF member, was seen actively campaigning for DPP candidate Francis Haiya ahead of the by-election scheduled for June 30 in Machinga Mikoko Constituency.
Defending her decision, Jolobala said on Sunday that her support for Haiya is based on what she believes is in the best interest of the people of the constituency.
She argued that voters deserve a representative capable of effectively addressing their concerns and driving development in the area, regardless of political affiliation.Esther Jolobala praises Mutharika as a true statesman
The incident has exposed tensions within UDF as political parties intensify campaigns ahead of the crucial by-election, which is expected to test the influence and grassroots strength of major political players in the district.
Political observers say the party’s response to the matter could have significant implications for internal unity and discipline, particularly as Malawi’s political landscape becomes increasingly competitive ahead of future electoral contests.Limpopo FM congratulates Suleman, Musowa, Jolobala for victories
