Mwanza, Malawi – More than 900 Malawian nationals who have returned from South Africa have been left stranded at the Mwanza Border as authorities and relevant stakeholders are yet to provide transport assistance to help them reach their respective destinations across the country.
According to information gathered at the border on Sunday, buses transporting the returnees from South Africa have been dropping them off at Mwanza before immediately making the return trip south, leaving hundreds of people to fend for themselves.Tragedy strikes in Mwanza: mother and child killed by collapsing ESCOM electric pole
The situation has sparked concern among the returnees, many of whom say they have exhausted their financial resources during the long journey and cannot afford transport fares to continue travelling to their homes in various districts.
Some of the affected individuals expressed frustration and uncertainty over their next move, saying they were not informed that they would have to arrange their own transport upon arrival in Malawi.
“We have travelled for many hours and arrived here with very little money. Most of us do not know how we will get home from Mwanza,” said one of the returnees.K Motors Repairs Ambulances For Free Of Charge For Mwanza District Hospital
Others complained that the lengthy journey had left them physically exhausted and vulnerable, especially women, children, and elderly people who are among those stranded at the border.
The arrival of such a large number of returnees has created congestion at the border post as many remain gathered while seeking transport and assistance from relatives, well-wishers, and local authorities.
As of Sunday, the Malawi Government had not issued an official statement indicating whether transportation support or any other form of assistance would be provided to the returnees.
