LILONGWE, Malawi — President Peter Mutharika is facing growing scrutiny following his decision to delegate Education Minister Bright Msaka to represent him at the unveiling ceremony of the mausoleum of late former Vice President Saulos Chilima in Nsipe, despite the presence of First Vice President Jane Ansah.

The decision has triggered debate among political commentators, who say it raises questions about adherence to established governance protocols and the symbolic role of vice presidents at high-level state functions.Vice President Jane Ansah Vows Swift Action to Protect Vulnerable Families During Northern Region Lean Season

Political analyst George Chaima argues that the move appears unusual, noting that vice presidents are typically expected to represent the head of state at major national events when the president is absent.

He observed that the event, which also attracted former President Joyce Banda and former Vice President Michael Usi, was significant enough to warrant delegation to one of the president’s constitutional deputies rather than a cabinet minister.VP Jane Ansah Attends Launch of Malawi Fashion Identity Project, Calls for Investment in Creative Industry

“While the president has the constitutional discretion to choose a representative, tradition and governance norms generally prioritize vice presidents for such duties,” Chaima said, adding that bypassing them risks weakening the perceived authority of the office.

Chaima further warned that the decision could be interpreted as undermining institutional hierarchy, potentially sending mixed signals about the country’s governance structure.

Concurring with this view, political analyst Chimwemwe Tsitsi said the choice is already fueling speculation about strained relations within the executive branch.UTM Condemns Alleged Mistreatment of Vice President Jane Ansah

Tsitsi noted that assigning a minister instead of either vice president at a high-profile national event has “inevitably raised political questions” about internal coordination and trust between the presidency and its deputies.

The controversy comes amid broader public interest in how state protocol is applied during sensitive national commemorations, particularly those involving high-ranking former and current leaders.Vice President Ansah Visits DODMA to Review Disaster Management Operations

As discussions continue, analysts say the episode highlights the importance of clear institutional practices to preserve the dignity and perceived independence of constitutional offices in Malawi’s governance system.
