The African Development Bank (AfDB) has described the Shire Valley Transformation Project (SVTP) as a transformative initiative with the potential to significantly enhance food security, agricultural productivity and livelihoods in Malawi.

Speaking after touring the project in Chikwawa on Sunday, AfDB Executive Director Nalishebo Shebo said the irrigation initiative is already demonstrating its capacity to unlock economic opportunities for thousands of households in the Lower Shire region.South Africa Police Arrest Migrants on Homebound Buses Ahead of Christmas

Shebo, who represents Malawi, Botswana, Mauritius and Zambia on the AfDB Board, said the visit provided an opportunity to assess the project’s progress firsthand and appreciate its impact on communities.

“The project is truly transformational. It has the potential to improve food production, strengthen food security and uplift the livelihoods of many Malawians,” said Shebo.

He added that witnessing the project’s implementation on the ground would help him advocate for additional support and possible future financing from the bank and its partners.

The Shire Valley Transformation Project is one of Malawi’s largest agricultural investments and is designed to provide reliable irrigation water to vast tracts of land in Chikwawa and Nsanje districts. Deputy Director in the Ministry of Finance, Francis Kachule, welcomed the AfDB delegation’s visit, describing it as an important step towards securing further development assistance for the country.

Kachule said the government’s partnership with the AfDB has been instrumental in advancing key infrastructure and agricultural development projects, including the SVTP.

“The visit is very important because it allows the bank’s leadership to appreciate the progress being made and the benefits communities are receiving. This will strengthen efforts to mobilise additional resources for Malawi,” he said.

As Malawi continues to face challenges related to food insecurity and climate shocks, stakeholders believe the project will play a crucial role in transforming agriculture from subsistence farming to commercial production, thereby contributing to national economic growth and poverty reduction.
