The Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) has welcomed the government’s decision to dedicate this year’s Independence Day to national prayers and reflection instead of government-funded celebrations, describing the move as a responsible response to the country’s economic challenges.

MAM spokesperson Sheikh Dinala Chabulika praised the decision by President Arthur Peter Mutharika, saying it demonstrates patriotism, prudent leadership and a commitment to addressing the country’s economic realities.

According to Chabulika, the decision sends a strong message that leaders should acknowledge national challenges and focus on finding practical solutions rather than maintaining costly traditions. MAM distributes food to Muslims in Nkhotakota

“We thank the President for this wise decision. This simply tells us that the President is a patriotic citizen. If something is not going well, do not force it to appear well, but rather acknowledge the challenges and come up with ways to fix them,” he said.

Resources Should Support Economic Recovery

Chabulika noted that Independence Day celebrations require substantial public expenditure each year, arguing that such resources can be redirected towards more urgent national priorities during the current economic hardships.

“As you know, each year we hold national celebrations and spend a lot of resources. To avoid such expenses, let us instead devote this day to prayers,” he said.FDH Bank Commits K100 Billion to Golomoti–Mangochi Road as William Mpinganjira Says Project Will Transform Malawi Tourism

He said MAM believes that prioritising prayer over expensive festivities reflects financial discipline while encouraging citizens to unite in seeking divine guidance for the nation.

Muslims Urged to Pray for Malawi

The Muslim Association of Malawi has since encouraged Muslims across the country to dedicate their worship gatherings to prayers for peace, prosperity, economic recovery and wise leadership.

Chabulika stressed that prayers do not need to be confined to one venue, saying worshippers can seek God’s intervention from their respective places of worship.

“We do not pray only at the stadium. Whether on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, people will pray in their designated places of worship, and God will answer us.

We have told our people to pray for our nation, pray for peace and prosperity, and pray that Malawi should have good leaders,” he added.

Government Prioritises Austerity Measures

Instead of traditional commemorations, Malawians have been encouraged to observe the day through thanksgiving, prayer, reflection and renewed patriotism while recommitting themselves to national development.

The decision marks a departure from previous years when Independence Day was celebrated with large public events funded by the government. Authorities say the move is intended to reduce public spending while encouraging national unity and collective reflection during a period of economic difficulty.

The endorsement by the Muslim Association of Malawi adds to growing support from religious organisations for the government’s call to use the national holiday as an opportunity to seek God’s guidance and promote peace, unity and sustainable development.
