Revenue Division High Court Judge Chimbizgani Kacheche has adjourned to a later date the cement case in which some people are alleged to have used former president Peter Mutharika’s Tax Payer Identification Number (TPIN). This means two years have elapsed since the case started. Last week, the accused persons— namely Mutharika’s former bodyguard Norman Chisale, former State Residences director general Peter Mukhito, Malawi Revenue Authority Deputy Commissioner General Roza Mbilizi and businessman Shafee Ahmed Chunara— failed to take plea because two defence team lawyers had not renewed their licences. Former president Peter Mutharika’s personal bodyguard Norman Chisale has filed a suit against the Attorney General (AG) demanding about K3.4 billion in compensation for unlawful arrest. His claims follow AG Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda’s failure to respond to the demand letter within 90 days from February 25 2022 to settle a K500 million compensation claim outside court following the High Court judgement that acquitted him in the case of attempted murder of Sigele Amani, a resident of Chimwankhunda Township in Blantyre. High Court Judge Redson Kapindu has adjourned to 25th July a Cement-gate case involving the irregular use of former president Peter Mutharika’s Tax Payer Identification Number (TPIN). Yesterday, four accused persons namely Mutharika’s former personal bodyguard Norman Chisale, former State Residences director general Peter Mukhitho, reinstated Malawi Revenue Authority Deputy Commissioner General Roza Mbilizi and businessman Shafee Ahmed Chunara appeared before Kapindu to take plea but failed because the defense said it had preliminary issues which it would like to raise. Attorney General Refuse To Compensate Norman Chisale

Attorney General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda has refused to pay Norman Chisale, former president Peter Mutharika’s body guard, K500 million for compensation in an attempted murder case which he was acquitted. Nyirenda says state was not wrong to prosecute Chisale although he was acquitted, adding that he is ready for defense if Chisale proceeds to court with the matter. Lawyer for Chisale, Chauncy Gondwe, says he is yet to receive a response from the attorney general for the case which his client is demanding the compensation for alleged false imprisonment, malicious prosecution and defamation.
