Malawi authorities have disclosed their plan to transfer 250 elephants from Liwonde to Kasungu National Park, this year.

The move is slated to start this month, according to director of National Parks and Wildlife, Bright Kumchedwa.

He said the development comes after news of conflicts with communities at Liwonde National Park due to over population.

Kumchedwa said: “Other animals such as buffaloes, Warthogs, antelopes will also be translocated.”

Currently, communities in Kasungu are being sensitised on the initiative apart from ensuring that there is tight security in and around the park.

“There is water and enough food for the animals in the park unlike in Liwonde. We also want to restock the park with more elephants as was the case before the year 2000,” he added.

The initiative, which will also see elephants being collared, is being jointly done with the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and Department of Tourism.
