Deputy Minister of Local Government Halima Daudi has asked the Embassy of Iceland to extend their development projects, currently being implemented in Mangochi and Nkhotakota, to Likoma District.
According to official sources, Daudi, who was in the district, said the people of Likoma need the Icelandic International Development Agency (Iceida) projects support to improve their livelihoods.
She mentioned poor transport and communication infrastructure, limited access to health care services, poor education services, poor governance, narrow revenue base for the local council and inadequate human resources as some of the challenges the district is currently facing.
Head of the Iceland Mission to Malawi Inga Dora Petursdottir said her embasy intends to engage with relevant stakeholders in the island district, to see possible areas for collaboration.
