Court Stops Unima’s Newly Established Schools

High Court in Zomba has stopped the Council of the University of Malawi from implementing its plans of establishing new schools and associated departments.

A communication from the Acting Registrar, Mary Wasiri, dated 19th August 2022 said the resolution for these establishments was made during the Council’s meeting on 16th December 2021.

Among others, the Council established within the institution, School of Arts, Communication and Design, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, Law, Economics and Governance and Natural and Applied Sciences.

The Council also appointed Acting Executive Deans for the new establishments.

But the court has granted an injunction to Khama Maere and five other claimants restraining the Council from going ahead with its decision.

The court documents we have seen further grant the claimants permission to apply for judicial review to review the decision of the Council of abolishing the Faculty of Law and instituting the other schools.

Initially, the Council had planned to start implementation of the decision on September 1 this year.

The defendant risks being in contempt of court if it ignores the court direction on the matter.
