Fear gripped the streets of Mzuzu on Monday morning after a group of masked thugs wielding pangas and other weapons stormed the city, blocking scheduled demonstrations by local vendors.
The assailants, who patrolled key sections of the M1 Road around Zigwagwa Market, openly warned onlookers against participating in the protests. Witnesses say the group moved in a coordinated manner, creating an atmosphere of intimidation and chaos.
“Muli ndi ife, muli ndi boma?” (“Are you with us or the government?”) one of the masked men challenged journalists attempting to take photos of the unfolding scene.
Despite the visible threats, police officers were seen standing by idly at the busy Shoprite roundabout, prompting concerns about their inaction in the face of growing insecurity.
The demonstration, organised by the Mzuzu Vendors Union, was aimed at pressing government authorities on issues affecting small-scale traders, including market space, poor infrastructure, and what the vendors say is the council’s failure to address their grievances.
“We have a letter of authorisation from the council to hold the demonstrations. However, we have received credible information that these men have been deployed by certain politicians to frustrate our efforts,” said Sikwese.
He added that the union is currently holding emergency consultations on whether to proceed with the protest or seek an alternative date.
As tensions remain high, residents and vendors are calling on law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and ensure the safety and democratic rights of citizens are protected.
This incident raises fresh concerns about the shrinking space for civic expression and political interference in grassroots activism in Malawi.
