Authorities at Nsanje District Hospital have decried alarming unsafe abortions, having registered 113 cases from June to September this year, 42 of which being young girls within the age ranges of 13 to 24, representing 37 percent.
Edna Samati who is responsible for Post- Abortion Care, says on average they attend to at least two unsafe abortions per day describing such a situation as unhealthy.
Youths from the area of Traditional Authority Mlolo in the district, Sheriffa Lekeman, and Annie Jimu, think having a Termination of Pregnancy law which could allow abortion in cases of rape and incest could help avert such concerns.
Family Planning Association of Malawi (FPAM) Director of Programs, Tazirwa Chipeta has today described the figures as shocking saying this is a sign that young girls are not enjoying universal health coverage fearing it contributes a lot to maternal mortality and morbidity rate.
Chipeta says they have been engaging service providers in all health facilities across the country to provide services in tandem with the revised guidelines on post abortion care adding that they are also empowering the youths to demand better services on sexual reproductive health.
