Police Arrest Their Good Samaritan

26-year-old Innocent Kananji is behind bars for allegedly creating a fake Facebook account bearing Inspector General Merlyne Yolamu’s name.

Like a movie, this is the same guy who a month ago assisted Limbe Police in Blantyre with K110 000 for the purchase of CCTV connectors to combat and prevent crime in the township.

Deputy National Police spokesperson Harry Namwaza says Kananji duped unsuspecting youths K150 000; promising them jobs as ‘police chief’.

“Further investigations established that Kananji had 13 different Facebook accounts bearing female names and pictures, which are also being investigated,” adds Kananji who hails from Balaka.

Kananji will answer a charge of cyber spamming, contrary to Section 91 of Electronic Transaction and Cyber Security Act of 2016.

After playing the ‘Good Samaritan’ in May, the suspect said: “As a citizen, it is my responsibility to support the efforts of Limbe Police in ensuring public safety.”

Then, Limbe Police Officer-In-Charge Gladson Chipumphula commended Kananji for the assistance; it woulf greatly contribute to the efficiency of the control room at Limbe Police station.

He added this would enable seamless connectivity and facilitate real-time monitoring of the town’s surveillance network.

People on social media are now discussing if the donation proceeds weren’t part of the funds he allegedly accumulated after dumping people online.
